CBR Cupid 416

"Arrow" was back this week with "Broken Hearts," an episode that not only featured the return of Carrie Cutter/Cupid, but also sealed Oliver and Felicity's fate as a couple. Damien Darhk's preliminary trial also began this week, with Captain Lance providing testimony in order to put Darhk away. While the flashbacks provided a deeper look into the mysticism of the island, the pulse of the episode was love -- and heartbreak -- and Cupid's presence highlighted the difficulties and tragedies of love quite perfectly.

Cupid was last seen in "Arrow" season three's episode, "Suicidal Tendencies," where Carrie Cutter (Amy Gumenick) was recruited into Amanda Waller's Suicide Squad. She assisted Diggle (David Ramsey) and Lyla (Audrey Marie Anderson) on a hostage crisis rescue mission. While on that mission she fell in love with Floyd Lawton/Deadshot (Michael Rowe). His untimely death on that mission destroyed Carrie, and this week she was back in Star City to rip apart the love of anyone she deemed too in love to die. Once team Arrow caught onto her game, they realized she was killing high-valued couples who were recently married. This gave Oliver (Stephen Amell) the idea to get fake married to Felicity, to draw Cupid out into the open.

The idea for the wedding was approached with very mixed feelings by Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards,) who broke up with Oliver in "Taken." Felicity, who was finally able to walk again, thanks to Curtis' brilliant spinal stimulation chip, was not willing to walk down the aisle with Oliver unless it was absolutely necessary. In this case, since Cupid has already killed one couple and had attempted to kill another, Felicity agreed to "say yes to the dress" temporarily, in a staged private wedding. This was the perfect opportunity however, for Oliver to tell Felicity how he still felt about her, because they were able to share their vows. In this moment, with Felicity in her wedding dress, and Oliver standing before a minister, he opened up his heart to her, and shared how she brought him into the light. Felicity also shared her vows, but they were interrupted by Cupid, who came blazing in with her arrows, declaring that "love was dead."

Felicity, though heartbroken and betrayed by Oliver's lies about William, was able to talk Cupid down from hurting her, by talking about all the wonderful qualities of love. How it's better to have experienced love, than to have lived an empty life alone. Diggle and Thea (Willa Holland) then apprehended Cupid, and turned her over to the police. Because both Oliver and Felicity's vows were so sincere, Oliver thought there might still be hope for them. Felicity closed that door when she pulled "the island" card, saying that deep down Oliver would always choose to be alone, because he was alone on the island, and in Starling City and that he doesn't know how to live his life in a partnership with another person.

While Team Arrow was taking down Cupid, Laurel (Katie Cassidy) and Captain Lance (Paul Blackthorne) were trying to prove that there was a reasonable amount of evidence to put Darhk (Neal McDonough) on trial. At first Laurel thought Diggle's testimony from the night of kidnapping would be enough, but Diggle was discredited when Darhk's lawyer falsified evidence about Diggle buying Thea drugs. When Captain Lance realized the only person who could testify against Darhk was himself, he took the stand and admitted to obstructing justice. This was enough to put Darhk on trial, but also enough for Lance to lose his badge.

The episode concluded with Darhk behind bars, but secretly wielding his ring, which may still give him power. Felicity decided that she wasn't just leaving Oliver, but also leaving Team Arrow. Considering what a strong pairing Oliver and Felicity have been over the last two seasons, it's surprising to see them breakup in such a seemingly permanent fashion. It begs the question, is this breakup just temporary, to set up a sweeping redemptive romance in the finale? Is Felicity leaving the show? Is she going to run Palmer Tech for a while with Curtis and take a step back from the Arrow cave? It's hard to say what the future holds for Felicity, but hopefully she'll back fighting crime alongside Team Arrow soon.

Next week's episode of "Arrow," titled "Beacon of Hope," sees the return of the Bug-eyed Bandit, a villain that Felicity and Ray Palmer had to take down in season one of "The Flash." "Brie Larvan (guest star Emily Kinney) breaks out of jail and turns up at Palmer Tech threatening to kill everyone unless she gets the bio-chip that is implanted in Felicity’s (Emily Bett Rickards) spine. When Oliver (Stephen Amell) realizes that Felicity, Thea (Willa Holland) and Donna (guest star Charlotte Ross) are trapped in Palmer Tech with everyone else, he looks to a surprising ally to help Team Arrow save the day."

"Arrow" airs Wednesdays on The CW at 8 p.m.
