SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for tonight's episode of "Arrow," "A.W.O.L.," which has not yet aired on the west coast at the time of publication.
Last week on "Arrow" it was revealed that Felicity was paralyzed, and would be wheelchair bound indefinitely. This revelation further strengthened the theory that Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) would become the DC Comics hacker-hero "Oracle." After "Arrow" executive producer Wendy Mericle debunked that theory, fans began to speculate if Felicity could become "Proxy" or even "Death." None of those theories panned out however, as Felicity's new code name on the show was revealed to be "Overwatch."
The name "Overwatch" was inspired by Felicity's bird's eye view of Team Arrow, as she helped them navigate the A.R.G.U.S. building tonight over the coms. "Overwatch" could also be a reference to executive producer Marc Guggeneim's unrelated novel of the same name, nut that could be a coincidence -- though Guggenheim did state on Twitter earlier today that Felicity's new moniker is an "Internet-suggested codename."
Felicity went thought an intense personal journey throughout this episode, and struggled to come back to the team. She even battled her doppelganger -- a hallucination of her former goth hacker self -- to get past her self-pity. It's about time Felicity got a code name, and "Overwatch" is a great one.
Check back for CBR's full recap of "A.W.O.L." later tonight.
