In "Apocalypse," Jean Grey returns to film for the first time since "X-Men: The Last Stand."

In "X2: X-Men United," director Bryan Singer laid the groundwork for the cult classic Phoenix Saga with Jean Grey. However, he departed the franchise to pursue another film and his vision ultimately fell into other hands. Now that he's back at the helm of the franchise, he weighed in on whether or not he has any interest in reimagining the Phoenix himself.

"The full Phoenix story, I have no idea," he told SlashFilm. "I would have to re-explore that. If it's already been explored, to re-explore and retell it. Plus the Phoenix story in the comic book has the Shi'ar Empire and the moon."

"As far as the idea of that brewing within [Jean Grey], without giving anything away I would say absolutely that interests me and you may find a piece of that in ['X-Men: Apocalypse']," he added.

He also explained that, in "Apocalypse," "She's trying to figure out her psychic powers, which are much more powerful than she realizes."

Directed by Singer and starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Sophie Turner, Olivia Munn, Oscar Isaac and many, many more, "X-Men: Apocalypse" arrives in theaters May 27, 2016.
