Early buzz for Jon Bernthal as the Punisher is so strong that a spinoff could be in the works.

Fans have only seen brief glimpses of Jon Bernthal as The Punisher/Frank Castle in the forthcoming "Daredevil" season two, but Marvel TV and Netflix execs have seen plenty. And they want more.

According to a report by TVLine, Marvel and Netflix are so impressed by what Bernthal has done with Castle that they're already considering giving him a spinoff series. If this were to become reality, the "Punisher" series would be the first such show not part of the original deal that included "Daredevil," "Jessica Jones," "Luke Cage," "Iron Fist," and culminating in "The Defenders."

Neither Netflix nor Marvel have commented on the report. Bernthal will debut as the Punisher alongside Elodie Yung as Elektra when "Daredevil's" second season becomes available on March 18. Series stars Charlie Cox, Elden Henson and Deborah Ann Woll all return for the new season.

UPDATE: Bernthal has given EW some new details about his take on the Punisher that has Netflix and Marvel so enamored (via ComicBook.com). He credits "Daredevil" showrunners Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez for coming up with a story that allows his character to develop in a "slow burn". Like past incarnations, Frank Castle is a military vet who "brought the war home with him [in] the worst possible way" and is also deeply affected by the trauma of losing his family.

"But with Frank, what was important was the emptiness inside him. He’s dealing with this unbelievable loss," explained Bernthal. "There’s unbelievable anger and hatred and shame. There’s a sense of responsibility and as a father and husband, if I were to lose my family on my watch … I had to put myself in as dark of place as possible the last six months."

He went on to say that Castle's character arc is closely tied to his relationship with others on the show. "The effect the other characters have on him will push him certain directions. I think once you see these characters collide, it’s tremendously interesting and emotionally gripping as well. It’s going to be a special season. If you thought last season of 'Daredevil' was dark, we’re going to a whole new place."
